Sibyl is a mobile satellite tasking app for Android. Originally developed as part of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) contract for warfighter apps, Sibyl integrates into commercial, civil, and military operations. Orbit Logic developed the Sibyl imaging satellite tasking app and associated server based on elements of its operationally proven Collection Planning and Analysis Workstation (CPAW) software. The Satellite Tasking app allows users to define an area of interest (AOI) and submit a request to a satellite to collect an image of the AOI. Sibyl will also be able to function in areas with limited network connectivity.
Context of the Sibyl Planning System: Simple, clean design provides an easy process flow for the handheld operator (Sibyl App for Android phone).
Sibyl displays all upcoming commercial satellite overflights with feasible imaging opportunities for the specified area, as well as the deadline for making a tasking request for the image to be collected on each overflight opportunity. A “Task” button allows the user to make a tasking request for any desired opportunity. A separate status page allows the user to check on the status of any previous tasking request. The Sibyl app interfaces with a support server, which provides data to support tasking, including satellite ephemeris and contact data. The support server validates and forwards handheld app tasking requests to the appropriate satellite control center for execution.
Sibyl mobile app and its support system are designed to operate with and without network connectivity. With network connectivity, the app is able to create and submit tasking requests, as well as receive satellite ephemeris data, satellite contact data, and tasking status updates. Without network connectivity, the app is still capable of determining tasking opportunities based on previously received satellite ephemeris and contact data. Tasking requests can be initiated and stored on the handheld device until network connectivity is restored. The messages being transmitted to/received by the app are small, so limited network connectivity can effectively support this proposed app. Intermittent connectivity to the network (even only once per week) allow the app to accurately determine satellite imaging opportunities.
The Orbit Logic Sibyl solution provides the following benefits:
- Operationally Proven Heritage - Orbit Logic software is used for planning U.S. commercial imaging satellites operated by DigitalGlobe.
- Flexible operations planning – designed for connectivity in various situations. Proven CPAW backend support.
- Ready for Operations quickly - A Sibyl system can be configured and running in a matter of days.
- Warfighter and First Responder in mind – warfighter and emergency response technology is evolving, this is the evolution.
